Pingdom alternative: 5 monitoring tools with free plans compared

Last reviewed 7 October 2026

Quick answerUptimeRobot covers Pingdom's plain uptime checks, not transaction checks: 50 free monitors, then Solo at $13 a month for 10, billed monthly. Better Stack (formerly Better Uptime) fits on-call; Uptime Kuma, self-hosting.

Pingdom alternative: the short answer

Four Pingdom alternatives with a free plan are UptimeRobot, Better Stack (formerly Better Uptime), HetrixTools and Pulsetic, plus Uptime Kuma if you can host software yourself. Pingdom has no free plan. As read on 7 October 2026, its entry plan is $18 a month, billed monthly.

UptimeRobot's Free plan holds 50 monitors at 5-minute checks, and its pricing card says no credit card is required. A monitor is one tracked endpoint, such as a URL, host, port, keyword check or cron job. Solo, its first paid plan, is $13 a month, billed monthly, for 10 monitors, from UptimeRobot's US pricing page as captured on September 29, 2026.

What Pingdom costs and counts

Pingdom prices bundles of checks, not monitors. Its entry plan, Synthetic Monitoring, holds 10 uptime checks, 1 advanced check and 50 SMS for $18 a month, billed monthly, or $16.50 a month, billed annually ($198 a year). The next step, with 25 uptime checks, 4 advanced checks and 100 SMS, is $40 a month, billed monthly.

Every Pingdom plan lists unlimited users, public status pages and reports. Pingdom offers a trial that includes Synthetics and real user monitoring (RUM) and shows no trial length. RUM is a separate product, also from $16.50 a month on annual payment.

Free Pingdom alternatives

Pingdom offers a trial and no free plan, while UptimeRobot's Free plan lets you move 50 monitors over before paying. HetrixTools gives 15 uptime monitors checked every minute and asks free users to log in every 90 days. Pulsetic gives 10 monitors, heartbeats or domains at 5-minute checks, plus 3 status pages. Better Stack gives 10 monitors and heartbeats, which are check-in calls that a scheduled job sends to a URL, with 3-minute checks per its Uptime page.

All four free plans send email alerts: Better Stack lists Slack and email, Pulsetic ticks email on Free, and HetrixTools and UptimeRobot include email on every plan.

SSL is where the free plans split. HetrixTools includes SSL and domain expiry checks on every plan, and Pulsetic ticks SSL checks on Free. UptimeRobot keeps SSL and domain-expiry reminders for its paid plans, and Better Stack's documentation puts its certificate and domain alerts on paid plans too. The best free uptime monitoring tools page sets all six free plans side by side.

Open-source Pingdom alternative: Uptime Kuma

Uptime Kuma is free, MIT-licensed software that you host yourself. It checks as often as every 20 seconds, runs multiple status pages and connects to 90+ notification services. It is not costless: you supply a server that runs Docker or Node.js 20.4 or later, and you update it by hand, which for Docker means pulling the new image and starting the container again on the same volume.

The project sells no hosted plan. Its README sends questions to GitHub Issues and Reddit, not email.

What you give up by leaving Pingdom

Pingdom's advanced checks, its separate RUM product and its unlimited users have no like-for-like row in the table above, so this page compares uptime checks only. UptimeRobot documents no multi-step or browser-based check for a checkout or booking flow, so it replaces Pingdom's plain uptime checks and nothing more. Its keyword monitor reads the raw HTML a server returns, not the page as a browser shows it.

  • UptimeRobot for plain up-or-down checks on a site or store. Start on Free, then move to Solo, $13 a month billed monthly, for checks as short as 60 seconds. UptimeRobot vs Pingdom has the full comparison.
  • Better Stack when a person on call needs phone and SMS alerts. Its responder license, a paid per-person seat, is $34 a month, billed monthly.
  • Uptime Kuma when you already run a server and want a free monitor on it; UptimeRobot alternatives compares it with the rest.
  • Pingdom when you want uptime checks and real user monitoring from one vendor.
